This paper provides a review of some relevant challenges and solutions in achieving Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) for Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) within Defence and Security applications. Emphasis is given to techniques considered more readily exploitable to autonomous surface exploration during future space missions. In particular the paper describes results from work completed addressing the generic problems of architectures, localisation, terrain sensing and planning. The paper aims to stimulate cross-over exploitation within the defence and space domains.
