Abstract:

A magnetometer is commonly used in the space sector for attitude determination or s/c coarse rate measurement. It presents the following advantages:
• Robust unit
• Very simple operation
• Very simple interface
• No field of view constrains
• No eclipse constrain
• Medium accuracy measurement (e.g. 0,5º)
One has to note that the accuracy is more dependent on the accuracy of the magnetic model (usually the IGRF) and on the residual magnetic field of the spacecraft. In some cases, it is even possible to achieve 0,1º accuracy or better. LusoSpace developed a magnetometer suitable for attitude determination and targeted for the AEOLUS satellite, in the frame of ESA contract nº 17639/03/NL/MM.
